Astafida as a nominative?

Photius s.v. seems to support Simon's astafida as a nominative (a similar entry can also be found in other lexica): Ἀσταφίδα καὶ ὀσταφίδα· οἱ Ἀττικοὶ ἑκατέρως λέγουσιν.

Kyriakides lists σταφίδα as vulg. for σταφίς.

Thus, it is safe to conclude that astafida is a vernacular variant of astafis.

Prosthetic vowel?

Ἀσταφίς is well attested in the Hippocratic Corpus, and in a number of later authors; ὀσταφίς is also attested, but is less common. Σταφίς is the most common form.

This is Greek staphis, idos in the Vulgar Latin form staphida nom. sing. with a prosthetic vowel.--Nubilus 17:09, 9 June 2011 (BST)

Nubilus - ἀσταφίς /astaphís/ and σταφίς /staphís/ were variant forms even in classical Greek times. Astafida is not nominative but accusative.
