John the Physician

The ω version of John the Physician's Therapeutics dates to the late thirteenth or early fourteenth century. It is written in a vernacular Greek dialect, with some interspersed classical vocabulary. The only edition[[1]] of the work is mainly based on an early 14th century manuscript from Cyprus (L).

The clavis and ω - as transmitted in L - are near contemporary, and they both contain evidence on an idiom that was not commonly used in writing at the time: even though Simon mainly relies on written sources for his dictionary, he often transliterates words in the vernacular pronunciation. When in doubt, he interviews native speakers, such as for instance in the entry on gliconium.

The lists below contain a selection of interesting vocabulary found in ω. Some words may appear, in varying spelling, in the clavis.
