Gypsos grece gipsum arabs vero gipsem dicit.

Apparatus:

Gypsos AC | Gipsos B e f

gipsem AC | gepsim B e f

Translation:

Gypsos is Greek for Latin gipsum {"gypsum, plaster"}, but an Arab calls it gipsem.

Commentary:

Greek γύψος /gýpsos/ is glossed by LSJ as I. "chalk". II. "gypsum". III. "cement". The Latin gypsum is obviously taken from Greek. Simon writes gipsum, signalling the late Latin and medieval pronunciation of 'y' as /i/.

For Arabic gipsem, cf. Wehr (1976): ﺟﺒﺱ /ğibs/ "gypsum; plaster of Paris"; Siggel (1950: 78): ﺟﺒﺴﻴﻥ ,ﺟﺒﺱ /ğibs, ğibsīn/ Gips, {i.e. "gypsum, plaster"}.
